The disappearance of University of Virginia (UVA) student Hannah Graham has been in the news nationwide. Now two NBC affiliates (NBC 12 and NBC 29) report UVA student leaders are launching a new safety program called “Buddies on Call.”

Trained “buddies” will be available to walk solo students home, between the hours of 10 p.m. and 2 a.m. Student class president Abraham Axler said that students signed up to be buddies will undergo background checks and will be trained in student intervention, as well as alcohol and drug abuse prevention.

It’s good to see students reaching out to help one another. This buddy system is one way students can help ensure safety on campus, and requiring “buddies” to have a background check, along with training, only helps make things safer for everyone.
