The Rocket, the Slippery Rock University school newspaper, reports that new hires at all schools within the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education will be required to have child abuse clearances, as a matter of safety. They will also undergo background checks and have fingerprints on file. Additionally, current students, faculty and staff must meet the same requirements by December 31, 2015.

We often see reports about new policies at colleges and universities in which newly hired staff will be required to undergo new background policies, which we applaud. What we often miss, though, is a policy that extends to current faculty and staff, as well as students who engage with minors on campus. This policy by the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education is a good step in the effort to protect minors, as well as others on campus.
