On January 1, 2016, new background check requirements in Illinois mean that school districts will begin checking to see if a student teacher has a criminal background in states other than Illinois, according to CBS Chicago news.

Although student teachers had been undergoing background checks prior to the new legislation, the Illinois State Board of Education said that in some cases, the system did not always find criminal cases of out-of-state students attending college in Illinois. The new law is designed to rectify that and further protect students.
